Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®, Home of the FITNESS Program

FITNESS (Fun In Teaching Nutrition and Exercise to Successful Students)

Our Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, home to the FITNESS Program, is a partnership between RMHCDC and the Division of Community Pediatrics at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital as well as local schools, to deliver an innovative nutrition and exercise curriculum to children.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have worked with our partners to adapt the FITNESS program to continue to address the immediate needs of the communities we serve. We have partnered with local restaurants and Share Our Strength, another local non-profit, to distribute food twice weekly to those in need. The program coordinators identified 55 vulnerable families to serve on a weekly basis. During this pandemic, RMHCDC is continuing to support the local community by providing free medical supplies, food, and other necessities to families in need.

When the effects of the pandemic have been resolved, this program will continue to partner with local schools to deliver a curriculum focused on healthy eating and the importance of physical activity to students in grades K-8.  Staffed with a Medical Director, Community Educator, Registered Dietitian and Exercise Physiologist and in collaboration with school staff, the goal of the program is to help children and families gain the knowledge, tools, and motivation to potentially achieve better health and to help reduce the incidence of childhood obesity and associated chronic disease.  The FITNESS Program piloted in Washington, DC during the 2017-18 school year, with plans to eventually expand into parts of MD and VA.
