National Nurses Week

Many of the services we provide to ease the hardship of children’s illness on families are only made possible because of nurses.

This year, National Nurses Week is celebrated May 6-12 to honor nurses and everything they do to improve health and wellbeing. The final day of Nurses Week is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who became known as the founder of professional nursing.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to work together with nurses to serve families in need. Here are just a few ways nurses impact our programs:

Ronald McDonald House® (RMH)

Our Ronald McDonald Houses help families stay nearby while their sick children are receiving treatment.  Because our Houses are just minutes

from local hospitals, it is easier for families to bring their little ones back to stay at RMH, where Nurse Clinicians can visit to do check-ups and treatments in the family’s guest room at the House.  These nurses help make it possible to give families this patient-centered care in a home-like environment.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms® (RMFR)

Our Ronald McDonald Family Room® at Children’s National Medical Center and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms® at Inova Children’s Hospital offer a quiet place in the hospital for families to rest, get a snack, or talk over treatment plans in a private place.  Nurses help make this possible by meeting our families in the RMFRs to talk and regroup.

Research shows that staying close by allows parents to better communicate with their child’s medial team and improves adherence to complicated treatment plans. Learn more.

Kids Mobile Medical Clinic/Ronald McDonald Care Mobile®

Nurses from MedStar Georgetown University Hospital are incredibly influential in helping this mobile doctors’ office partnership bring primary health care directly to children in their communities, through immunizations, preventative check-ups, treatment for chronic and acute illnesses, and dental and mental health screenings. We also help families get access to ongoing care with specialists.  The nurses who staff the Kids Mobile Medical Clinic/Ronald McDonald Care Mobile make this work possible and we are so grateful for the way they care for our families! Learn more.
